My Health Care Platform

(A special note: I realize many cats may not agree with my political musings. I welcome and respect all viewpoints in the comments box.)

Today, as the primaries continued, I sat down at my computer to finalize my HealthCare PlatForm. This is the only area of my platform which is not complete.

With the conventions coming up, I must get busy!

I am in a quandry about this issue. So I headed over to discuss my concerns with my un-paid political consultants, Bill and Ginny. They live next door to me. Bill was a Navy pilot in World War II, and Ginny worked for the state department in London. They have lived here in Point Loma for something like a bazillion years, so if you live in Point Loma and don't know Bill and Ginny, then you are totally a nobody!

Bill and Ginny are very liberal Democrats, and they are the most well informed people I know. (that includes my pet human)

Usually I just climb the tree up to their deck to visit.

But today, with such serious business, I think I will be polite and go down the steps and over to their house the right way.
I sat down at their kitchen counter.

Ginny: what is it, Skittles, you looked perturbed.

Me: Ginny, I am perturbed! This health care thing is bothering me. I was leaning in favor of some sort of universal health care. But then I learned that 33% of all medicare costs are related to type II diabetes. I don't mean type I or gestational diabetes, but the kind humans get from poor eating and exercise choices. I've heard it's an epidemic! And little kids are getting it too. Why should everyone else pay for that? I feel that way about smoking too, but it's a very sensitive subject.

Bill: (getting excited) Hey!!!! I've been saying that all along! The only way to change their behaviour is to make them foot their own bills. Hit them in the pocket book.....that'll get their attention!

Me: Bill, I thought you were a democrat! Cuz, right now you sound like a republican!

Bill: (sputters and glares angrily) I am a Democrat!!!! George W. Bush has ruined this country!

Me: Ginny, what do you think?

Ginny: I'm for education. Teach people how their diets are hurting them and to eat right. Give up the fast food and mocha lattes, and eat real food like apples and bananas. Educate them. They don't know any better, especially the children.

Oh, my......Ginny is a very smart lady.....I'm leaning her way, but I really have to think this one through. There is no easy answer!

Luv,
Skittles, The Huntress

We have universal health care in New Zealand. It is by no means perfect, and we still have a big industry supporting private hospitals and health insurance. Money from our taxes is used towards health care of everybody - I can't imagine what it would be like to have a sick child or family member and be stressed about the costs.

We have to pay to go to the GP, but if an ambulance is called and we go to the hospital it is all free.

What a good topic to discuss Skittles. i would vote for you.

A very interesting debate. I am glad we have the NHS here, it's not perfect but everyone gets help. FAZ

Hi Skittles, I think it's great you got advice from your knowledgeable neighbors. I agree with Ginny that education is VERY important but would also like to include one more thought:

If you are poor/low income/fixed income or even a moderate income, you might find healthy choices in eating to be too expensive. Why should potato chips cost less than lettuce? Why should processed foods cost less than produce?

I think in order to reduce the rampant spread of diabetes in this country we have to educate + make healthy food choices affordable.

So says the gang at TT&TOT :D

I agree with TT&TO that unfortunately, eating healthy costs much more, so many don't have the choise to eat healthy. Also, Type II Diabetes can sometimes be caused by other health problems that are not linked to poor dietary choices.

My mommy is all for universal healthcare. She finds it sickening that our healthcare is so unequal. Go Skittles!

I am with Ginny. Education is crucial - and by the way - no one of the candidates talks about that! Free education should be an issue! To pay for education like you do in this country is pretty much outrageous, I think.
Affordable universal health care is crucial too. A lot of times you do don't go to the doctor or hospital because you can not afford it, and then of course the bill is WAY higher when you eventually must because the issue was not treated initially.
The key is prevention to begin with. Educate people and promote healthy life styles.
Which will not happen because it would cut into the money making of big corporations like the junk food industry.
Have you ever thought about why almost EVERY processed food today includes High Fructose Corn Syrup (a poison) or Corn Syrup Solids???
Oh my - there I am rambling away...

Our daddy gots type II diabetes because he gots mono when he was 35! It affected his liver, which dey could fix and his pancreas, which dey can't fix. Daddy pays a lot of money fur insurints and still has a thousand dollar deductable! Universal healthcare along wif education and pressure on our food manufacturers to stop processing the nutrients and flavor out of our food and then adding salt and sugar to put da flavor back in would be a great start.

Dear Zippy, Sadie, and Speedy,

I'm so sorry to hear about your daddy! Of course there are other ways pet humans can become ill with type II diabetes. I don't mean to include your daddy in with the group I'm talking about.

My pet human went without insurance for 18 months, for the first time in her life. It changed how she views the whole issue.

I'm not sure education in the complete answer. Like I know my Bean knows better than to eat some of the stuff she eat, but she come home from work all stressed out and want to sit down in front of the TV with Chocolate Ice Cream. I would purrfer she had vanilla so we could share but...so maybe killing all the stupid stressful people be helpful?

Yes, killing all the stupid stressful people would be a start.

we think that fast food should be outlawed. Espeshully french fries. they're nothing more than starch sticks waiting to raise your sugar levels. We think that the only snack food that should be allowed is tem-tay-shuns.

WOWY - that's a lot to think about. Our mommakitty' health care is paid by her jobbie and it's furry good - it only costs $15 whether you break a leg or have a labotomy! Now on da other hand, Mommakitty's jobie only pays for half of our blurpy sisser's insurance, so da rest of da premium comes out of momma's paycheck - it's still pretty reasonable. But daddykitty works fer himself and has to pay fer his own - it's furry expensive so he never goes, even when he's sick. He doesn't git regular check ups either. This is not a good system. America embraces entrepenurialism, but doesn't take care of da entrepeneurs.
