Saturday Caturday

Good Morning!

Yesterday I reflected on something I witnessed while walking on Shelter Island, which is a very lovely area of San Diego Bay. Shelter Island is a harbor in San Diego, and the most exclusive yacht clubs are located there. It's also the entrance to an area of San Diego called the La Playa neighborhood. This neighborhood has the most expensive real estate in the county, and many of San Diego's oldest and wealthiest families live there. (Interestingly, the aunt and uncle of one of the Cat Blogosphere's most famous participants lives in La Playa! But I don't think I should say who, unless I have permission.)

Many San Diegans visit Shelter Island, whether they have money or not. It's just a lovely place, away from tourist attractions, for locals to rest, relax, rejuvenate, and enjoy our beautiful city.

Yesterday's post was about a bag lady picking through garbage on Shelter Island, and feeding thrown out food to the ducks and seagulls.

Zippy, Speedy and Sadie wrote a comment to that particular post that touched my heart. They said:

"Compassion is a gift not everyone is given...When mom and dad first got the bean gerls dey was furry poor. Often they would come home from work and someone would have left a package fur dem. Sometimes clothes for da gerls, sometimes shoes, sometimes a nice roasting chicken or a bag of potatoes...mom never knew who it was but had her suspicions. She has always paid dat forward, and tawt da gerls to do da same. If it wasn't for da kindness of dat nice old couple sometimes dey would have gone hungry, she's never forgotten that."

I don't talk much about my pet human's life. But she almost cried when she read the comment. Up until a few years ago, she had a good job and was doing well financially. She was also married. She became very ill, lost her job, and then lost her husband, who was more interested in her paycheck than her.

There were some lean times. But even when she was eating only ramen noodles, I was always well fed.

Throughout all of this, she has continued to participate in a church group that feeds the homeless in this neighborhood, because despite the wealth, there are homeless and hungry people.

One time, at the soup kitchen, one of the homeless guys approached her and a coworker and thanked them. He said:

"I want to thank you not for the food, but to tell you that this is very hard for me to be here. But I have had to learn that not all Christians are givers, some are receivers. I have had a difficult time learning how to receive graciously. I want to thank you for giving me the opportunity to learn how to be a better Christian by learning how to receive."

I and my pet human are very blessed by friends who have stood by without question and helped out. We are able to live in a safe neighborhood, surrounded by friends who call us family. And she is able to hold a full time job now. Yeah! Today I count all my blessings as infinite!

Thank you Zippy, Sadie and Speedy for your comment!

Formerly Feral Friday

Good morning!

The sun was shining so beautifully this morning, I decided to go for a walk on Shelter Island.

My pet human went with me. It's a lovely area of the San Diego bay, where lots of really wealthy people keep their boats. All of the most exclusive yacht clubs are on Shelter Island.

It's a wonderful place to walk, and many people and dogs walk there. (I'm the only cat, though!)

Today, I watched while a bag lady went through the yacht club trash cans picking out the recyclables. She turns them in for the redemption refund. This is one way she earns money. She looked pretty clean, but her clothes were very old. So I don't think she is necessarily homeless, but definitely struggling.

I was really amazed by something she did. Whenever she found leftover food in the trash can, such as a half eaten hamburger or french fries, she took the food out of the trash and fed the ducks and seagulls.

I was struck by this paradox....so much wealth....and one bag lady, with million dollar yachts surrounding her, making sure that garbage doesn't go to waste.

Food for thought during this presidential election season.

Wordy Wednesday

For this Wordy Wednesday, I would like to take you on a tour of my garden. Spring is starting to arrive here, and soon I will be sending out invites to my second annual garden party. Last year was so much fun! We saw the elusive, yet world famous Point Loma Parrots! I'm amazed that it's been almost a year!Is that a lizard!!!??? No, it's still to early for those juicy tidbits to be sunning themselves on the brick.
Ok, what's happening in the back yard? I see the cushions to the patio furniture are still stacked under the canopy in case of rain. That will change soon!
This smells wonderful! I love new green stuff.
Everything looks pretty good here too. I think this is where Mr. Skunk lives, but I haven't smelled him for a week or two. Maybe he moved. Good!
The Sago Palm is in good shape.
Flower buds!!!! Yeah!
The roses are leafing out.
And me of course! I always look perfect in my garden.
The garden party will be just after Easter. WooooHooooo!

As a Formerly Feral Feline, I have a few street smarts. Denial is an excellent skill to have.

Here is one of my all time favorite photos of myself. Regal, dignified, lovely tabby markings.....all the best qualities a presidential hopeful could have.

I especially like this photo because I look so beautiful next to the 3 antique crystal hurricane lanterns that have been in the family for years.

Why am I republishing this photo? Scroll down to find out why.

This is what the crystal hurricane lanterns looked like this morning.

Morocco Monday

I'm so excited! My series, Morocco Monday, was mentioned in a very famous blog: Global Voices Online. Many Moroccan felines are being featured there.

Welcome to Morocco Monday. Today we visit the "fortified" city of Ait Benhaddou, a picturesque, citadel like village on the side of a mountain. It lies along the caravan route between the Sahara and Marrakech. Ait Benhaddou was named a Unesco World Heritage Site in 1987, and several films have been shot there, such as Lawrence of Arabia and The Man Who Would Be King.

Here we will meet several very important felines running the citadel.

First: The Art Critic

Wait! How many Art Critics are there????
Here we have: The General Manager of the Shopping Bazaar
And The Shadow Cat
Last, we meet this feline. I don't know his official title. He was a bit secretive. So maybe he is Chief Palm Tree Inspector, or A SPY!!! See he is spying on poor ol' Walt!
Wow, our fellow felines in Morocco pretty much run the place!

The Sunday News

FLASH NEWS!!!!!! I just became aware of a comment my grandma left for me back on January 23rd. Grandma faked me out by posting it as anonymous. She called tonight to see why I hadn't responded.

As you may know, I am still at war with my pet human, and grandma says I can come live with her.

I have reposted the comment:

Hey Skittles, I admire you for getting the upper hand with your pet human. I heard that you might be coming to stay for a week this summer. You can plan on special treats...tender, young crickets, lizards, and best of all, bunnies. I will try to keep the wicked gardners out of your turf. There is ONE rule when you come..NO SEX TOYS.. It's nice and soft and cushy! She says I should be embarrassed, but I'm just cuddling! I still love my SlyCat....he's #1!!
Retaliation is on the way. Maybe instead of lizards in her shoes, I will get my own camera. Since she insists on dating again.....who knows what kind of compromising positions I will catch her in. She says she's not that kinda girl. We'll see about that!

Monday Meme (And Full Monty 4 SlyCat)

My dear boyfriend, SlyCat, tagged me for a meme. It's a very simple meme. I am to tell 3 new things about myself. (I am also supposed to pass this on and link three other kitties, but more on that later.)

1. My pet human refuses to feed me the wet food anymore. All I get is the dry food.

She says it's because I would only lick the gravy, then leave the rest. She would throw it out, and (she says) that's wasteful.

When I am elected POTUS, I will pass a law requiring Friskies to bottle the gravy separate from the food. Then I will be happy.

2. I had to stay indoors for THREE STRAIGHT DAYS! I went stir crazy. My pet human said it was cabin fever. Anyways, it rained here for 3 days, and since I like to roll in the mud, she shut my access window. THE NERVE! So what if I bring in a little mud? She's my servant, and it's her job to clean up my messes.

3. (This one is really bad!) My pet human has disobeyed house rules and violated her curfew several times in the past couple of months. I have seen her leave with a man, get in his car, and come home late. Her curfew is 7:00 p.m. She gets in around 9:00 p.m.

I grounded her, but she just looked at me quizzically. "Look" she said, "I've started dating again. It's normal and I want to go out."

DATING!!!!! HORRORS!

Then what? She'll get married??? She did that once before and I disapproved highly. He made her shut the bedroom door to keep me out! In fact, she may not know this, but I sabotaged the relationship. I put lizards in his suit pockets, dead rats in his tool box....you get the picture. Eventually he left. Good! I don't want another man around here. They are nothing but bothers!

MEN!

So, the thing about linking: my mouse is dying....the computer mouse. It takes me forever to get text highlighted. So as soon as my pet human goes to Circuit City, things will be fine.

Actually, I would like to request that any kitty friends who wish to whap her.....go ahead and feel free to do so. Especially Bonnie Underfoot, cause she has the mega-whap. My pet human could use the whapping.

VOTE FOR ME!

(Continued thoughts from the side yard)

I am the only Fusion Candidate!

What does that mean? I support some positions which currently are defined as liberal. I also support some positions which are defined as very conservative, although they are also defined within classical liberalism.

First, some of my positions on social issues fall into the liberal category:

Pro-choice
Pro civil same sex union (congrats to Karl and Ruis!)

Why? The Constitution provided for freedom of religion. Actually it prohibits the government from preferring any one religion, and we now say: separation of church and state.

AWESOME! I AGREE.

Hold on.........there's more.

The logical flip side to this argument is that the church should not favor one form of government over another. In my book, it's a logical extension of the Constitutional separation.

Keep politics out of religion.

AND

Keep religion out of politics.

My pet human goes to church, but she
doesn't agree with the proselytizers who want government to legislate and criminalize private, personal decisions that many humans face, whether they have a religion or not. Some matters are civil matters. If one chooses to adopt a particular religion and practice that faith, cool. But don't force it on me with the threat of penalties.

Second: I tend towards some classical liberal positions. Keep the federal government small and restricted to basics: defense of the nation, regulating inter-state commerce, etc. Back to the original Constitution. I am very much against an invasive, uncontrollable central power.

I support the division of power (executive, legislative and judicial) and the checks and balances system devised in the Constitution to prevent the majority from taking power. I believe in individual rights.

The rest should be left to the states.

Just on the basis of government as a business, we are too big to manage effectively by letting the federal government run everything. I live in California, which on it's own is the 7th largest economy in the world. Keep it small and simple. KISS KISS!

One last thing to mention......why do we need a Homeland Security Department? Isn't that what our military is to do? Bring them home, and protect us here!

More later.
